Week 9 - my experiences of Twitter so far

It annoys me when I don't get the opportunity to take part in the organised session for the week - that happened this week with the twitter session due to school holidays creeping up on me & a 7 year old birthday party etc. I find I don't get to practice with a group of people which them leaves me floundering and time wasting as I try and navigate my way around the new tool. I lose valuable play time and the chance to ask stupid questions - which I know is OK in this environment. I tried to follow the twitter session but found lots of short messages with lots of highlighted words and what appeared to be coded messages. I couldn't really follow any sort of conversation and things seemed to be repeated (eg: Sarah said 3 times that they were starting in 75 minutes) So I am unsure if I am doing it correctly. I would like to understand how to use twitter properly and can see the benefits, so will have to have a good play when time permits.

  1. Twitter is easy to use but it takes time to build a network and get a handle of what's going on. Have a look at this post I wrote a couple of years ago called "Starting to feel the Twitter love": http://sarah-stewart.blogspot.com/2008/04/starting-to-feel-twitter-love.html

  3. Thanks Sarah, I found that useful. I have just answered a question that Carolyn Hastie left for me on Twitter about the Midwives Determination 2010 - do I support the incremental reform and hope it gets through even though it still gives Dr's power to veto a midwife or would I like to see it squashed until we get a truly workable system where women have the choice and midwives can provide the full scope of care in an autonomous way. It was very hard to answer that in 140 characters, hence why I made 4 tweets- I neeed to get better at being short and succinct. May be better to include it in a blog or discuss it on skype. I'm trying to build my networks and feel the Twitter love. Did feel a bit like I was talking to myself in cyber space - which I do in real life anyway, so shouldn't feel weird really!!

  4. Yes...when you start, you are talking to yourself...and as I have said many times, it takes times to work out how your audience is and to bring them in. One way is to keep networking...commenting on other blogs...getting out and about & deliberately connecting with people. Once you've finished your studies for the year, I'd strongly advise that you do the 31 day blog challenge (found on the Problogger blog) - that will work you through 31 activities that will improve you blog.

Aim to post at least 3 blog posts per week...so write a blog post as your answer to Carolyn.

have a listen to the re4coding of the VIDM session that Laureen held...she includes some very good advice in it for midwives wanting to know how to use social media:

  5. I've also just found out about the 31 day blog challenge and will likely to commit to it later in the year or early in the new year, maybe we can compare experiences!
